Week 5 - Art Journal 2016, Part 1

Hey everyone! I have been wanting to share more of 'how I made it' posts. I know that I like to see the process of how it's done (especially with pictures) and so I thought you might too. That is why I've got this weeks art journal challenges split up. Today, I'll  show you in pics how I made my page for Journal52. Plus, I'll show you my entries for The Documented Life Project.

I'll be honest, I don't know what I was thinking when I planned this project, but here's how I started it:

I grabbed a cereal box (they actually make "Frozen" cereal) and I cut globular shapes (that's what my husband called them.)

I wanted my page to have some texture so I thought of the idea to sort of outline my shapes on the inside, with some glue gun glue (I bought some sparkly glue sticks recently and that's what was in my glue gun.) Here are a few:

Since the prompt was psychedelic, I knew I needed some super bright colors. But first I'd need to gesso my shapes so the colors would be their boldest:

While they were drying, I decided to work on the actual page of my project. I decided to go with black so the colors on the shapes would stand out more. I added some metallic blue also:

For whatever reason, I still thought it needed more. So I stamped some gold pigment ink with a background stamp:

Now comes the fun part. In my head, when I think of psychedelic, I think of bright swirling colors. So that's what I tried to make:

I painted all of them in this fashion, but with different colors and palettes. Once they were all painted, I globbed on some gloss mod podge to make them shine:

And then this is how I put it together:

I know, I know. It's kind of funky. But that's part of what psychedelics about, right?

And now on to my entries for the DLP. First is my weekly view:

And here is my PAC card:

The challenge for the PAC card was to have someone, besides you, draw or write on the card before you worked on it.

So I gave my husband an act back I had, and he drew a stick figure playing baseball (he's really good at his stick figures, especially the ones playing baseball.)

If you want to see my week four entries, click here.

And that's all for today. In my next post, I'll show you my entries for week 5's Color Me Positive and Embrace Your Art.

Have a great day everyone!!

Crayon Resist Background Tutorial

Are you guys ready for another background tutorial?

Today I've got a really simple one. It takes only a few supplies and is super fun and easy.

Here it is:

Here's the supplies you'll need:

🔸a piece of card stock
🔸a white crayon
🔸ink pads (I used pigment inks)
🔸tissue

This time I'll go ahead and put the instructions before the pic.

Step 1: Draw a design or picture on your card stock using the white crayon.
(Since you wouldn't be able to see my design because it's white, I drew it using my iPad for you to see)

Step 2: Smear your first color of ink on your card stock.
(You can use a blending tool, however I seemed to misplace mine so I just went ahead and applied the ink directly from the pad)

Step 3: Continue to apply different colors of ink.
(I used four different colors. A stamp pad that has multiple shades of one color (like kaleidocolor) would work good too)

Step 4: Keep on applying all the colors till your card stock is completely covered. No white marks except for the crayon.
(I probably applied the colors about two different times)

Step 5: Gently buff your work to let the crayon resist show through.
(I didn't have any tissue so I used a piece of toilet paper)

And that's it!

Here is the Gothic arch atc I made using the background:

On a side note, you don't always have to do a design for this technique. You could also draw a picture.

Let me know if you make this background or send me a pic!

Color Challenge #4 with a Tutorial

I have decided that I'm going to try my best at including some sort of tutorial in every post. And hopefully once a week an involved altered art tutorial. I hope you all will enjoy that.

So I gave myself another color challenge. The palette is courtesy of colourpod.com. This time instead of hitting random, I purposely looked for Valentines Day colors:

The project I'm going to walk you through, I actually made for a couple of challenges and a swap on swap bot. The challengers are:

I will also be posting a few product links of the key products I used at the end of this post.

Here's my finished piece:

My project is a 5x5 journal page. I started with a background I made by laying my card stock in alcohol inks and a blending solution. I will do a step by step picture tutorial of this method soon.

I have a whole drawer full of pre-made backgrounds scraps. And so I pulled out some that matched my scheme for the flags:

I inked up the sides of my flags with a Kaleidoscope brand ink palette.

I moved on to the envelope which I painted with water colors.

Real quickly, I have to tell you about a craft supply I bought. It is "make your own rub ons." You can either stamp an image to rub on, or print one from your computer. It's really neat. I'll have the product info at the bottom of the post if you want to check it out.

I printed some flourishes on the rub on paper and rubbed it on my envelope.

I gathered the rest of my supplies; some tule ribbon and punchenella (also known as sequin scrap.)

I attached them to my page and also added a little embossing in a couple places.

I felt it needed one last touch, so I added a border of metal tape dyed with alcohol ink.

And here it is one more time.

I also made a couple more projects for my color challenge that I plan to swap.

Here is some mail art:
The front of it is pretty much the same as the back. I plan to cover it in clear packaging tape once I put the addresses on.

And here is a Gothic arch atc. I used the "make your own rub ons" for this project as well. I had also printed some words.

And there you have it!

Thank you so much for checking it out. What do you all think?
